I know evil’s name.
I’ve seen it’s face.
It doesn’t look like you.
Trapped in your own mind.
Hiding from them.
Hiding from harm.
One by one by one the choice was made.
Motherhood decides a woman’s fate?
Do you despise her?
Will you avenge her?
To teach a lesson
from this disaster.
Shamed and neglected by, by the ones who should protect you.
And you have served your time
so I won’t place blame for someone else’s mistake.
One by one by one she’ll count the days.
But the memory will never fade.
Do you despise her?
Will you avenge her?
To teach a lesson
from this disaster.
Give her the strength to carry on.
Give her the strength to carry on.
Give her the strength to carry on.
Give me the strength to carry on.
Give her the strength to carry on.
Give her the strength to carry on.
Give her the strength to carry on.
Give her the strength to carry on.
Turn def ears, we turn blind eyes
and as oh I sing the why

A Legacy’s Demise Song Meaning & Comments:

One of my absolute favorite songs by Forget Cassettes. This song is so moving and full of meaning. To me it’s about the inequality that women endure, specifically from pregnancy and a shotgun wedding. The legacy’s demise is the last name that she forfeits when and if she is married, potentially the last of her line. When she winds up pregnant prior to marriage people might cast her out, and if she considers an abortion they might think of that as evil (but she isn’t the evil one). Struggling with the decisions she is trapped in her own mind and hiding from the emotional and potentially physical harm of her partner and society. The song is asking us and proposing that motherhood should not decide a woman’s fate, that of a housewife, that of a vessel for an unwanted pregnancy. A woman’s right to her own body.
Pregnancy and unwanted motherhood is the disaster (for her and the unloved child) and she deserves to be avenged for the hardships her body endures and the course reset her professional life will take, she is also immediately devalued by other men when she is pregnant and a mother. In some cultures her family will actually be expected to pay the man’s family to take her as she is considered so worthless, this being done in the form of a dowry. The woman is shamed, she is neglected and she serves hard time raising the child. The mistake of accidental pregnancy and the encouragement of society and the husband and surely others to keep the baby despite poor planning, resources and other values that stupid fucking religions instill. This happens all around us and we turn def ears and blind eyes to the women of our world. Give her and the protagonist female singer the strength to carry on. Give her the strength.
