Nonlyrical Music Picks #2

Nonlyrical | No Comments

Continuing in the spirit of sharing great music that doesn’t have any lyrics, I’ve got some killer songs with this update. TheSixtyone has been satisfying my every music need recently (outside of La Blogotheque which is spectacular, check out this performance by Sigur Ros) and several friends have gotten hooked on “Good Luck at the Gunfight” which I shared in this electronica picks post, claiming that it makes great driving music. I agree actually… My favorite driving songs from them right now are Kimberly and Malibu, listen here. I’m also sending a shout out for a shirt they sent me with the picture below, my experience with gunfights has been marginal at best.

So back to the music at hand, Ronald Jenkees has been killing it again with his new song Guitar Sound. As a guitar player myself, the song is moving and more of a story than most of what I usually hear or play. It sort of meanders and builds and then changes almost completely towards the end. This song is an adventure and anyone who hasn’t seen or heard of Ronald needs to check out this YouTube video of Stay Crunchy right now and then go out and buy their kids keyboards.

Pick number two this time around comes from ugress and it’s called Regression 22. This translike song almost reminds me of an upbeet remix of some of the songs from Pure Moods, a CD compilation from the mid 90′s or another song by Ray Lynch from his album Deep Breakfast called Celestial Soda Pop that I loved as a kid. While I’m straying from the point I also want to highly recommend a CD set called A Childhood Remembered and the The Cello’s Song by David Arkenstone and Kostia and Dragon’s Daughter by David Lanz and Paul Speer.

Other great nonlyrical songs recently include Paper Bag by Panic Girl and Helvetica by Arms and Sleepers.

This could really go on forever so I’m going to stop here. Keep your eye out for the next Nonlyrical Music Picks post if you’re into this kind of stuff.

Electronica Top Picks

Time for another update on the non lyric based music front. The following songs have limited vocals but are worthy of a little special attention.

I’m enjoying the music of A Scissors (Brian Michael Cunningham) and his latest EP Faster. As far as the songs go OneFourThree builds nicely and seems to feature a few video game sounds mixed in. Flours Part 1 is my favorite track so far, the mixed in vocals from Stranger than Fiction are great. I’ve put a sample below:

Lyric Sample:

I’m glad I caught you. I wanted to give you these.
Wait, you can give presents, but not receive them?
That sounds awfully inconsistent, Mr. Crick.

Wait, I know, I’ll purchase them! Yeah, I’ll purchase them.
What are they? Flours.
What? I brought you flours.

Good Luck At The Gunfight has me hooked with their song Puma. I’m not sure the lyrics were taken from somewhere or just created from scratch? Most of the other songs they’ve got out right now are great as well and their official site has a fun mini-game at the bottom… check it out here.

Lyric Sample:

you still shine like you’re sixteen
don’t you miss the daydreams?
the sound of your heart beat
you’ll always be my prom queen.

As much as I love music with lyrics, there are some really great songs out there that just don’t have vocals or are remixed so the vocals are less emphasized. Every now and again I like to draw attention to these songs and spread the word. Here are just a few to get things started…

Station X (Jamie Ballantyne out of the UK) has made a few awesome remixes that I’d like to point out, he’s taking a break now but has put all of the songs out for free download! If you enjoy techno sounds check them out at thesixtyone or SoundCloud my personal favorite is Dawn of the Dead Remix originally by Does It Offend You, Yeah from their album You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into. You can check out the original song on YouTube here.

Lyric Sample:

Like the men that were before me, he said
the dawn of the dead came toward me, I’m afraid.
Today I stood and walked away
I’m never coming back this way
If you say so
I’ll leave home, I’ll leave home

This second song is by Sekklow and it’s a remix of Up originally by M83 off their album Saturdays Youth(which is quite amazing in its own right) on YouTube here.

Lyric Sample:

If I clean my rocket, we’ll go flying today
and we’ll hit the pockets, of warm and crispy air
Oh, you lovely boy, you smell so sweet, we ride so well
and we load our pistols as we perch upon my razor wings

The third and final song is by a group called Cathayist and it has absolutely no lyrics, the sounds is electronica. The song is called Foreign Places and the band is from Hong Kong China.
